Dominique Falla is an incredibly gifted Australian artist whose amazing piece We are all a Part of the Same Thing never fails to amaze me.
For too long, people have viewed themselves as separate and I wanted to represent a multitude of individuals using the nails, and then coloured string to show how we are all interconnected, and that together, we can make something beautiful.
The intricacy of the work is something I simply cannot stop being stunned by. As well as the truly poignant meaning. We are all a part of something beautiful, something big and something complicated. I recently learned about mirror neurons, which are parts of the brain that are activated when we see others do something. This is incredibly fascinating to me, because that means our brain can actually comprehend what others are doing and then imitate it- our ability to emphasize is scientific. And then I learnt that if it weren’t for our constant awareness: the receptors in our skin, for example, then we’d technically be able to feel, literally feel, what others are feeling, simply by looking at them.
We are truly connected, and it’s such a shame that we take it for granted.
